I was amazed at how this book touched my heart. Kate's struggles seem to be nearly identical to my own life. It is a great source of help to read how she handles different situations in her Christian walk and then apply them to my own life. Easy reading but thought-provoking as well.

Really nothing I write will do justice to this classic biographical/novel of a young woman's journey through life and love. It is highly recommended by Elisabeth Elliot one of my spiritual mentors and those who have read her books will know what that means. I was immensely influenced by "In His Steps" in my teens, but needed a heart to heart view of another young girls's struggles to grow into a godly women as I moved into my twenties as an unmarried young woman. Elisabeth Prentiss' book addressed a real need I had as a young woman yearning to become a godly woman in a modern and sin ridden culture.

At last: A book for intermediate, publishing writers who are wanting to step up to the next level! This book is gold, filled with page after page of real-world examples, firsthand advice, and solid information for selling to the editors of women's magazines.

But...the author has been done a serious disservice by her publisher. The typeface is almost painful to read, typos occur on just about every other page, and the layout is amateurish, as if this were a beginning designer's first experience with QuarkXpress. (The cover, on the other hand, is absolutely perfect for this book.)

So, if you write to publish, buy this book. Buy copies for your writing friends. Tell the world. It's that good. (And it begs the question: "Why hasn't anybody done this before?!") But warn 'em to stock up on strong lightbulbs, aspirin, and a fair amount of patience to do battle with the printed page.

Do you want to sell an article to Reader's Digest? McCalls? Learn how to target each magazine by reading FEMININE WILES. Filled with practical, fresh advice for writers, the book offers lively, concrete examples and anecdotes to illustrate secret tips to writing and selling in this competitive market. Boetig simplifies the structure for articles which makes a great "how to." This book is a "must" for any freelance writer.

I've read tons of books on the craft and business of writing, but this is by far the best. This book has more information packed into less than 200 pages than any other book on the market. Ms. Boetig writes in an engaging, easy to read style, and she WILL answers the questions no one else does. If there are secrets to succeeding as a non-fiction writer, they are in this book. It should be a constant reference for every serious writer.

This is the second in Lowell's trilogy and it is wonderful. I read "Untamed" first and then I read this book in ONE DAY...it was that good. The story of Duncan and Amber had me hooked from the first page..what a tale! You actually felt like you were living in this time period with them. I can't pick a favorite of the trilogy but "Forbidden' ranks up there at the top. I hope a fourth book is made!

Lowell weaves a grand story with memorable characters. Lowell offsets the unbelivable aspects of the characters with human weakness that added to the depth of the characters. I must admit I did think Amber needed more backbone to stand on her own opposite the character of Duncan, but its just my opinion. I particularly liked how she incorporated the characters from Untamed but did so without loosing readers that may not have read Untamed first. I also think Lowell could have her best book yet with the story of Erik. I'm hoping she made his character so intriguing for the same reason she mad Duncan intriguing in Untamed!

Outstanding! This was one of the best romance novels that I have ever read. The characters were interesting and appealing; the story was original and creative.

The heroine is Amber the Untouched, so named because of her special affinity to amber -- all things amber belong to her -- and because of her special ability to feel the emotions of others by touching them. Lowell thoroughly explores both the advantages and the drawbacks of such an ability. The hero, Duncan of Maxwell, the Scots Hammer (his name is charming and lyrical, like much of the writing in this book) is the perfect combination of strength and sensitivity. The amber prophecy, the revelation that attended Amber's birth, defines the cosmology of the book. As a lover of fantasy, I was totally captivated by it! Amber and Duncan's story is gracefully and beautifully told.

Like everyone else, I can't wait for Erik's story!

In preparing our list of Christmas books to share with others, we had to search far and wide on amazon to find this particular book, a paperback edition of the classic Night Before Christmas.

This is the book I've used for years when reading this story to my own children, passing on Tasha Tudor and other illustrators. Why?

Although we can find the same poem and pay a lot more, with award winning illustrators, the illustrations provided by Douglas Gorsline are surely the best. They are quite colorful, and offer details little children love looking into...cats lie sleepily on the window sill, we see an overview of the town, the presents spilling from the open sack are intriguing and plentiful, and Jolly St. Nick is -- well, quite Jolly (as you can see by looking at the cover!)

The story is an "abridged version" - I'm not sure about other parents, but we read this on Christmas Eve, and we only have so much time and energy. Everything we remember from the classic poem by Clement Clarke Moore is in this version.

(From "'Twas the Night Before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse" to "He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,"HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!" In between we have everything, from the names of the eight tiny reindeer, to a belly that shakes like a bowl full of jelly, including dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, when they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky".

In other words, don't be scared off by 'abridged'!)

Perhaps a hardcover edition might be more appropriate if you're giving a gift (unless you're giving to more than one child), but this book is one of the best offers we've found!

A classic done simply and inexpensively!

We have an inexpensive paperback version (see our reviews) of this classic poem, and we said that's enough for us. That was before we looked through this beautifully illustrated (by Bruce Whatley) edition of The Night Before Christmas.

The lyrics are the same, from book to book, but the fanciful illustrations in this one are enough to engage adults and children as they read this book together.

This beautiful book was in my family as a hard cover edition for many years and was a Christmas Eve tradition for my four sons when they were growing up. It's poor battered body disappeared some time after the last of my little ones went off into the adult world. I am so delighted to see it back again, though this time as a nicely affordable soft cover. Clement C. Moore's enchanting story poem already provides an atmosphere filled with warmth and joyful expectation and with the addition of Tasha Tudor's quaint, nostalgic water-colors from an antique New England the Christmas magic is complete!
The winter landscapes fill our senses and Tasha's own gray tabby cat and Welsh Corgi welcome us into this charming world.
Tasha's Santa that you will meet in this book has been portrayed as the poem describes him...a right jolly old elf. He's not that much larger than the corgi and his team really consists of eight "tiny" reindeer. His pointy ears and his Eskimo mukluks add to the delightful ambiance of the book. He dances with the toys and with the happy animals and we can truly believe it will be a happy Christmas for all.
I hope this book becomes a Christmas Eve tradition for many, many more families.

Elizabeth Peters is in fine form in this novel of intrigue, suspense, and love! The heroine, Dr. Vicky Bliss, an expert on Medieval art, is asked to join a cruise down the Nile to try and identify a thief, and a clever and exciting story winds all over Egypt. As always, the characters make the story and "Sir John" steals every scene. There are numerous plot twists and touches of Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers which enrich this highly entertaining tale. Peters skillfully entwines wit and wisdom with passion, Egyptology, and murder.
Fans of Peters will really enjoy this book with each re-reading. The plot creation and character development are some of her best, and her humorous style makes one laugh even in the moments of greatest suspense!

Having long been a fan of Elizabeth Peters, I was ecstatic when "Night Train to Memphis", the fifth book in her Vicky Bliss series came out.

A continuation of the adventures of Doctor Vicky Bliss, a museum worker in Munich, this book follows her on a cruise down the Nile, takes her all over the Egyptian countryside, and finally ends where it started --- in Vicky's German apartment. Along the way, several recurring characters show up, including old friends and villains, the irrepressible Schmidt, and of course, Sir John Smythe; the quintessential gentleman thief and Vicky's sometimes lover. This time however, there is a small complication affecting their relationship, which leads to the miscommunication, misinterpreted signals, and missed chances that characterize Peter's books ---- and make them some of the most enjoyable mysteries on the market. The insults are quick, the Egyptology casual and comprehensive, and country music references abound.

This is a wonderful book, featuring yet another strong, smart, feminist heroine, who never crosses the line from aggressive to unlikable. While "Night Train to Memphis" can definitely stand alone, I would also reccomend the first couple of books about Vicky, "Borrower of the Night", "The Street of Five Moons", "Sillhouette in Scarlet", and "Trogan Gold".

John and Vicky are back! This is the fourth book in the wonderful Vicky Bliss series by Elizabeth Peters. If you haven't read any of the novels, the book you should be purchasing is the Street of the Five Moons. That said, Vicky receives an assignment in coordination with the Munich Police Force to travel to Egypt under the guise of a tour guide on a small luxury cruise. One of the best men in literature, the enigmatic John Smythe, also appears on the scene. The plot is superbly exexcuted, the novel is set in the Peters' area of expertise(Egypt/Egyptology), and the story flies. Peters' characters make the novel: Vicky as our sassy and intelligent heroine, John as the mysterious and witty art thief, Schmidt-the intelligent if highly eccentrict museumcurator for whom Vicky works, and villains galore. New readers really must start at the beginning. If you've read the previous Vicky Bliss novels, after finishing Night Train to Memphis, I highly reccommend you take out Camelot Caper from your local library. John DID come before Vicky, and this shows him as Peters began to form him, and explains that "first scam" John loves to makes allusions to.

This book was a great read. It focused as much on people who own(and sometimes abuse) animals as the animals themself. It delves into the everyday workings of an animal shelter in detail (which is not all fun and games). I think this book should be read by anyone considering adopting an animal because it is also a resource on how to find the one for you. I will definately adopt all my future pets from shelters rather than purchasing them from a pet store after reading this book. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I was hoping for a little bit more James Herriot type stories with happy endings.

Ms. Hess does a wonderful job in portraying the true life aspects of the life and work in an animal shelter. As was previously expressed, it is a book that everyone should read since it is not only about animals but about the people who take them into their lives as well. We need to take a serious look at our motivations in becoming pet owners. I have passed the book on to my friends to read. It was a wonderful experience and I could not put it down.

For everyone who has ever adopted an animal, surrendered an animal, loved an animal or simply wants to know how we who work at a shelter manage to hang in there, this is the book. Elizabeth Hess has done a marvelous job recording her insights into the very stressful, often frustrating, often heartwarming aspect of this very difficult job. It is not a depressing book, but, rather, a realistic one. I could have written every single word she has put on paper, even though my shelter is many hundreds of miles away from hers and deals with a different population. What most people do not realize, and which this book points out, is that it is a humane shelter's job to protect the animals, most of which are abused and neglected, and get them into stable, non-abusive homes. This can be source of stress, as the average person thinks of a shelter as a pet store. We are far more than that, as Ms. Hess points it. She covers the horrors of puppy mills, the frustrations of working with an abusive public and non-caring judicial system, and the marvelous families who adopt and care for the unwanted and suffering. The most wonderful animals are found in shelters, and often some of the most wonderful people. Thank you, Ms. Hess, for letting everyone see this.

This is one of the best books I have read Actually it is the best book I have ever read.It is about this girl Allie Parker who is going home for Christmas vacation she doesn't really want to go but she ends up going after all. When she goes to the rest stop on her way home she meets cute Ben Harrington and his little brother Tim.Later she finds out that they are going her way since by this time Tim has this huge crush on her he is really happy,but Ben isn't. Allie has two gorgeous twin sisters and soon finds out because of them and their superficial friends that Ben was a star jock when he went to school there. Well enough of this story if you want to know more you are just going to have to read the book The only thing I can tell you is that it's a wonderful book and it is really fun reading it. I know everyone who reads it will love it as much as I did maybe even more no I don't think anyone can like it more than I already do. Happy reading:))!!!!!!!!!

this book is great- one of the best Love Stories. it's so sweet, i just really liked the things he said to her, and the way that he treated her. she is so lucky to get a guy like that!

I have to admit, Im adicted to these books. But this one was better than I thought it would be. I when I first read the back cover, I thought that the storyline was kind of cheesey, but I read it anyway. I didn't really like it until the end though, when Ben told Allie that everytime he saw a silver car, he hoped it was her, and how he got jealous of Tim everytime she put her arm around him.

Hospitality, history, helpful and practical information all packed into one verbal and visual delight. This is what one finds inside the cover of the concisely complete book about tea and how to enjoy it by Elizabeth Knight. She has managed to tuck a large amount of information into a very pleasantly readable book that should be in everyone's home even if they aren't usually a tea drinker. This is practical information that can be used by real people, not some elaborate idea that takes a staff of half a dozen to implement.

Ms. Knight's writing paints vivid pictures even without the lovely watercolor illustrations, and the party ideas can be used as guidelines for launching many a celebration or even quiet gatherings. Her genuine enthusiasm for her subject is evident throughout and rubs off on the reader. Buy two copies,you'll find yourself thinking this is also a welcome gift.

I've given Elizabeth Knight's Tea With Friends several times as gifts to tea lovers and tea lovers-in-training. The recipient always loves it! This book combines information about tea with imaginative ideas, including delicious-sounding menus, for tea events for each month of the year. January's Hogmanay Tea sounds like fun. It comes complete with instructions for reading teas and a delicious recipe for Scottish Scones. And, as a book lover, I'm drawn to the literary tea for September. Perfect as a hostess gift.

Amazingly, Elizabeth Knight's book achieves the Herculean task of providing a primer for beginners as well as delighting the avid and informed hostess with creative and polished tea themes. The menus serve as both a journey and a destination; have a look and enjoy both!

The art, coupled with the quotations and introductory material make this a delightful book just to leaf through, but the ideas and the warmth of them sing, "It's time for a cup of tea with friends."

The initial chapter, "Taking Tea," launches the novice but serves the informed as a succinct reference. Keep this volume in an easily accessible place!

This book is dynamite! It is one every woman should read. Dr. Vliet outlines and addresses so many of the complaints most women have but the world ignores. This book contains all the information and ammunition necessary to take to our doctors to demand our problems be addressed and treated. Women no longer have to accept the oft repeated "It's all in your head" comment so many of us have heard all these years. Dr. Vliet not only helps us understand what ails us, and suggests alternatives, she tells us what to look for and what to ask the doctor when we visit. And, she shows us how to listen to our body and to learn that there are things we *can* do to get the help we need. As the title suggests, women are Screaming To Be Heard, and Dr. Vliet directs us in how to make ourselves heard--and not only that, to get the care and attention we need.

As other reviewers have pointed out, this book addresses almost any question you might have about hormonal issues for women. Even better is that Dr. Vliet has no axe to grind: she won't be a cheerleader for either the "everything must be natural" or the "traditional medical establishment" camp. She forms her opinions carefully: she is completely tuned into women's experiences of their symptoms, but at the same time, she won't promote "natural" hormones unless her experience and the scientific data back up their effectiveness. For example, she points out how "natural" thyroid replacement hormones don't have the ideal combination of T3 and T4, while at the same time acknowledging that T3 can be crucial to wellness (which many doctors don't realize, insisting on giving only T4) and explaining how to get T3 in a more biocompatible form.

This book is jam-packed with information and may be heavy reading for someone who doesn't have an intellectual bent. Once you've read it, you'll likely know more about hormones than your doctor does (which is sad!). However, if you're looking for a book that will teach you everything you'll need to know to be your own patient advocate, you'll be in seventh heaven.

For more in-depth coverage of thyroid issues, I highly recommend "Living Well With Hypothyroidism" by Mary Shomon. "Listening to Your Hormones" and "The Thyroid Solution" are good too, but not the first place I turn.

After over 12 yrs of doctors telling me my fatique was depression, lack of sleep, my imagination, nothing at all, etc.... I was so very fortunate to find this book. Dr. Vliet addresses so many problems that women have due to hormonal problems.

Do not underestimate the importance of hormones! I had a complete hysterectomy 13 yrs ago and about 12 yrs ago began having severe fatique, mental fuzziness, memory problems, bladder problems, headaches, plus other problems. Every doctor I went to see never even addressed these problems as hormonal. Although I was on hormonal therapy, my various combinations just did not help enough. I knew something was not right, but trying to tell your doctor that you know what the problem is just does not work, or it did not work for me. Most of the doctors I saw did not take my symptoms seriously and thus I searched for 12 yrs for help.

Then I read Dr. Vliet's book and all of my questions and concerns were answered! Everything began to make sense. I cannot stress this enough - IF YOU ARE A WOMAN, READ THIS BOOK!

The story of how David Wilkerson came to found Teen Challenge should be a must read for anyone who follows Jesus Christ. The Cross and the Switchblade describes how Wilkerson put feet on his faith that took him from rural Pennsylvania to the streets of New York City. It's the story of how a pastor followed the leading of the Holy Spirit and reached out to minister to people with whom the churches would not associate.

Wilkerson describes in his book how essential it is to meet the unloved where they are, rather than waiting for them to show up in church all dressed up and ready to worship within the ranks of the clean and respectable. He also rightly emphasizes the importance of follow up, how one can't just expect to go out and distribute tracts or preach from street corners without also developing real, loving relationships with people and ministering to their needs, both spiritually and physically.

Now that Teen Challenge International has grown to over 200 centers around the world, it is interesting to note that the struggle in recovery ministry continues to be much the same: It's extremely difficult to get people to reach out in love to those who have never been loved, and it's nearly impossible to get church members to venture outside their doors to love their neighbors as they love themselves.

I praise God for Rev. Wilkerson and the way that he listened to God and ventured out in faith. I thank him for sharing the story of his work.

A powerful book that will send God-bumps down your spine! Even if you are not a fan of David Wilkerson's later writings, this book is truly a God send. Read this book if you want to learn of the power of the Holy Spirit in the lives of others.

What a tremendous message this book has to give. Miracles happen right in the worst parts of New York, away from the glamourous bits, right in the middle of the hard, the tough, the smelly and the nasty - and it actually keeps on happening.

These days, so much has changed. A local pentecostal preacher once told me that he went to Leeds one Saturday; that he was so disgusted by the beggars, and used to see the same ones all the time, how awful that they should always be there; and once he got real close up to one, who was (from what he told me) probably very weak, maybe even dying, lying on the ground, got about six inches away from their ear, and shouted at the top of his voice, "GET A JOB!!!"

Stand this in contrast with the Wilkerson man. This guy, realizing that the zonkos and beggars know that they're sinners, possibly scarcely realizing anything else at all, goes and gives them a bed for the night - feeds them - gives them a bath and warm clothes. The tells them that God knows them and has already fixed up a plan for them - that to the God who made the sun and the outer planets, THEY matter - "whosoever will" can come and drink from the waters of life, that they can repent, and be made blameless before the king of kings.

[Life isn't cheap to this man.]

Then the guy fixes up this organisation called "teen challenge", held together by almost no money at all, but lots of prayer, who pulls loads of dropouts and folks who are very nearly dead from all over the place and stands them on the the higher ground...

Man, this book is so good. I know that these days, many of the big churches... (I used to be in Perth, Western Australia) and there was this huge church near to the Casino. The car park was full of BMWs, and all the evidence was that the church was really inwards looking, far too concerned with "signs and wonders" to remember about the plan of Salvation at all. So much for the lost, no place for them. When I went to Yorkshire, I was amazed how the church had similarly split along these lines - those who preached the gospel, the same one as David Wilkerson preached - to the lost sheep - (go and READ this, will you) and those who prayed for (and maybe got) bigger houses, fatter share options, sports cars, foreign holidays, etc. The contrast is huge.

Read this book and find out what the cost of discipleship to Christ really means - how many days and nights of prayer it really takes to move those mountains - and what faith is REALLY about. And the failures, when Sonny does not come back, and all the disappointments when it doesn't seem to go to plan and they're just about to get kicked out of the building...

I was brought up with this book, and as far as I can remember, I have worn out probably six copies. Time I got myself a new one....
